Propellerhead Newsletter

Welcome to September! Hopefully this newsletter is not interrupting your Reason and Record production marathons. We've been hearing from users that Reason 5 and Record 1.5 has led to a time-warp phenomenon where they sit down to play for a few minutes on the new devices and get up hours later without realizing how much time had passed. We hope you've been getting on well with the new versions. We've got some items in this newsletter sure to inspire you further.

In this issue:

  • The King Adrock!
  • Kongstrocity: Building a Beast
  • Upgrade Paths Demystified
  • Producer Conferences Announced
  • Straight from the Interwebs

"Suckers they be saying they can take out Adam Horovitz!"

The Beastie Boys could probably lay claim to a few very prestigious titles. They are one of the longest surviving acts in Hip Hop, one of the best selling, one of the most respected, and one of the most experimental. During the last 3 decades they have gone from Hardcore Punk to Rap and just about everywhere else in the genre catalog, spawning hit after hit in the process.

Since it was introduced, Reason has been at the heart of the Beastie Boys' production workflow. We recently sat down the The King Adrock, Adam Horovitz, to take a look at how he approaches creating music and why Reason caused him to cast his SP1200 aside and "never look back."

In addition to our usual artist profile, we have included an additional "deleted scenes" video for Beastie Boys fans to devour. Adam shared some story gems that we just couldn't let hit the cutting room floor!

CDM = Create Drum Monstrocities

You have probably seen our construction of the "World's Biggest Drum Machine" that's been making the rounds of tech blogs, music blogs, gadget blogs, twitter tweets, and pretty much any other method that people use to say "have you SEEN this thing?!" Peter Kirn over at is never one to just passively consume a technology news story. He contacted us to find out how we made it. How DOES one goes about building a "Kongstrocity?" His site is the definitive "making of" story. Be sure to check it out!

Choosing the Right Upgrade Path

We're getting a lot of questions about the various upgrade paths available. Here's how it works, plain and simple:

If you own any version of Reason but not Record, the product to get is Record for Reason Owners. This will give you both Reason 5 and Record 1.5. If you already own both Reason and Record (such as in the Record Reason Duo), you just need the Reason upgrade. The Reason upgrade includes a free upgrade to Record 1.5. If you have Record only and you want access to the tasty features in Reason 5 then get Reason for Record Owners.
