52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 47: Malström Graintable Synthesisposted 2011-02-10 at 18:16
If you think of last three weeks of Synth School as primary school, then this week we're graduating up to Middle School. Don't worry, though... there's no detention or pop quizzes. This week we'll move onto the Malström Graintable Synthesizer which was introduced in Reason version 2.0.
I think you'll be surprised with how comfortable you are switching to a new synth. You'll be applying a lot of what you've learned already, like ADSR envelopes, oscillator pitch controls, etc. You'll also be seeing new controls and knobs that come with the graintable synthesis territory, like Shift and Motion.

These tutorials are great! I think it would be nice, perhaps a bit of work involved, to put it all in one mega download. The Reason people would love you for it. I would even pay for them.

I needed this, always wondered what the shift control was exactly, and I didn't know that the motion at the extreme left froze the motion... Thanks!

Brilliant work on these James, you deserve an award.
The power you're placing In the hands of new(and old)comers is immense but at the same time easy to grasp. Respect.

Never really been a fan of the malstrom, because to be honest i never really understood it...only used it really for basses. After watching this video it opened my eyes to what its all about. A inspired 3 hour session tweaking on the malstrom followed afterwards with much better results. Cheers James.

James, thank you so much for going through all of these walkthroughs for us. You have taught me a TON in a matter of a couple of days. The patches you put together are killer too. Just want you to know there's people out here who appreciate your efforts more than you know.
Take care and thanks man.

Yet another insightful tutorial JB. What makes this the icing on the cake for me, is the fact that since 2.0 I've played around with the control knobs- shaping sounds without knowing exactly what I'll get. Well, what I got often times was amazing. But now I a full understanding mixed with the ability to never be afraid to seek and experiment. What a combination!!
