Reason and Reason Essentials use an authorization system designed to be as flexible as possible, while at the same time providing the best possible protection for your license. Here’s how it works:
The core of the authorization system is your license number, which has to be registered to your user account on the Propellerhead web site.
Launch Reason/Reason Essentials, type in your Propellerhead user name and password in the Welcome dialog and click Log in.
The program then contacts the Propellerhead server and verifies that your Reason/Reason Essentials license is registered to your Propellerhead user account. If everything is OK, the program launches with full functionality.
All your purchased Rack Extensions and active Trial Rack Extensions will also be available in the session (if you have previously downloaded the Rack Extensions to your computer).
Authorizing for use without Internet access
Note that the authorization process requires Internet connection!
If you want to use Reason/Reason Essentials without Internet access later on, you can download and install the CodeMeter application and then authorize your computer (and/or an optional Ignition Key USB stick) from your Propellerhead user account.
Plug in your Ignition Key (if you have one), go here and click the Authorize button:
The Authorizer application launches and takes you to the Authorize Computer and Keys web page.
On the Authorize Computer and Keys page, click the Authorize button in the Computer section to write your Reason/Reason Essentials license to your computer:
The Authorizer app automatically launches the CodeMeter app in the background and the Reason/Reason Essentials license is written to your computer.
The next time you launch Reason/Reason Essentials the program automatically detects that your computer is authorized and the Welcome dialog is automatically skipped.
Further down on the Authorize Computer and Keys page you can also choose to authorize an optional Ignition Key USB stick (or a Propellerhead Balance audio interface, if you have one).
Click the Authorize button in the Ignition Key section to write your Reason/Reason Essentials license to your Ignition Key (and in the Balance section to write to your Balance audio interface).
If you then should plug your Ignition Key USB stick (or Balance) into another computer, which has Reason/Reason Essentials installed, you will be able to run Reason/Reason Essentials in authorized mode on that computer – without Internet access. Note that this computer also needs to have CodeMeter installed!
Writing your Rack Extension license
If you have any purchased Rack Extensions, the combined license for these can also be written to your computer and/or Ignition Key (or Balance audio interface) so you can use them without Internet access:
Plug in your Ignition Key/Balance (if you have any), go here and click the Sync All button:
Now, the Rack Extensions are updated (if necessary) and the combined license is automatically written to your computer (and to the connected Ignition Key/Balance, if any).
Note that only purchased Rack Extensions can be authorized on your computer/Ignition Key/Balance. Trial Rack Extensions always require that you log in using Internet Verification.
Running in Demo Mode
Finally, if you don’t have a working Internet connection, or any authorized computer or Ignition Key hardware, you can run Reason in Demo Mode.
In Demo Mode you can work as usual and even save your work. However, you cannot open songs in Demo Mode. To be able to open songs the program has to be authorized (computer or Ignition Key or Internet Verification, as described above).
