When we set out to create Figure we knew an amazing sound was crucial to its function and simple enjoyment. Fortunately, we didn’t have to look far to find amazing sounds. Powered by Reason, our flagship desktop music production software, Figure puts our advanced Thor Polysonic Synthesizer and Kong Drum Designer in your pocket.

Playing bass, drums, and lead melodies on Figure all happens through the performance pads. These have been designed for touch control from the beginning. You can tap them like traditional keyboards or pad controllers or you can simply hold your finger down and let the rhythm wheels provide a pattern for you. You can easily tap into the sound-sculpting power of Thor’s filters, envelopes, and effects by adjusting each preset’s “Tweaks”. Don’t know what a filter or envelope is? No problem! Just move your finger along the same performance pad and listen to the changes in sound.

Making Music on Figure

Performance Pad

Tap it, slide it, whatever floats your note…

The performance box on each screen in Figure is your first stop for music making. It’s where you play the notes and beats that make up your song. Slide your finger along the pad to play different notes in the scale or even tap it to play notes manually. Whichever you do, definitely experiment with your vertical or horizontal position to hear how it changes the sound.

Rhythm Wheel

I got rhythm!

Don’t trust your own tapping? Or perhaps you’re looking for a little suggestive inspiration. The rhythm wheels will play notes in preset patterns and rhythms. The best part is that you can record your notes first and experiment with different settings on the rhythm wheel after the fact. You’ll be amazed how different settings on the rhythm wheel can give your music completely different feels.

Range Wheel

Home on the range

The Range wheel helps you select how wide your notes span. You can set it to a wide range from very low notes to very high notes or a narrow range between the highest and lowest note. Like all the wheels in Figure, you can play with this after the fact. One range might make a lead line sit perfectly in your mix while wider another range might help notes jump out and scream “hear me!”

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti

The Scale Steps wheel is where you decide how many notes are in your melodies and bass lines. Set it to 1 and you’ll just have one note, C for example, in several octaves depending on how wide your range wheel is set (remember that wheel from above?). Set your Scale Steps to 2 and you’ll get an intermediate note between octaves. Set it to 3 and, you guessed it… MORE NOTES!

Tweak

Tweak your sound to freak your sound

Each instrument section has a corresponding Tweak tab with anywhere from one to three “tweaks.” These tweaks can be subtle colorations to the sound or they can be radical wobbling, crunching, or aggressive reshaping. Just like the performance pads, you can record your tweak movements on the pad to evolve the sound over time. Record one tweak at a time or use the multi-touch screen on the iPhone to take control of all tweaks at the same time.
